Health Science

 

Overview

Labouré College of Healthcare's Associate of Science in Health Science is a flexible program designed for students who plan to apply* for health programs in respiratory care, nursing, and radiation therapy in the future, as well as students interested in earning an associate degree while exploring a variety of health fields. Recognizing the ongoing demand for healthcare professionals, the Health Science degree program addresses this need by providing fundamental professional skills and a robust educational foundation built on courses in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Mathematics, and Natural Sciences. In addition, the program provides opportunities for students to complete core health science courses, delivering essential knowledge for success in diverse healthcare fields and facilitating a smooth transition to bachelor's level studies. 

*Note: Students must apply to and be admitted to selective programs. 

Program Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to: 

  • Apply principles of health sciences by integrating knowledge from humanities, social sciences, mathematics, and natural sciences to analyze and solve problems within the field.
  • Explore careers, opportunities, pathways and responsibilities of health professionals in different healthcare fields.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking in health-related contexts by evaluating and synthesizing information from diverse sources to make informed decisions.
  • Communicate effectively by articulating concepts clearly and persuasively in both written and oral forms.
  • Utilize quantitative reasoning by applying mathematical principles to analyze and interpret data relevant to health science contexts.
  • Demonstrate ethical and cultural competence by applying ethical principles and showing cultural sensitivity.
  • Conduct evidence-based research by designing, conducting, and analyzing research using appropriate methods within the field.
  • Collaborate effectively in interdisciplinary teams by working cooperatively with diverse health professionals to address health-related challenges.
  • Apply technology to practice by utilizing current technology and tools for data analysis, research, and communication.

 

The 62-credit associate degree in Health Science contains four components:

  • The 32-credit Labouré College of Healthcare Arts and Sciences Common Core which provides a foundation of knowledge and skills from the liberal arts and sciences.
  • A 30-credit Health Science core that encompasses essential knowledge of the healthcare field such as the nature of disease, medical terminology and procedures, the structure of the U.S. healthcare system, healthcare finance and policy, and roles and functions of healthcare providers.
  • Open elective Arts and Science courses
  • Transfer of courses from other specialty areas

Program of Study

While the College makes every effort to avoid schedule changes, the College may cancel courses or alter course schedules without prior notification.

 

**Students in the Health Science program should meet with an Academic Advisor regularly to review course selections, discuss their academic progress, and identify professional and personal goals. Advisors make recommendations regarding course selection and sequence and remain key points of contact and sources of guidance throughout students' academic careers at Labouré.

The Associate of Science in Health Science program requires 6 credits for HUM 2000.

 

Total Program Credits: 62

 

Students are awarded the degree after meeting the requirements listed below:

  • Completion of a minimum of 30 credit hours at the College
  • Successful completion of the degree program as prescribed by the College
  • A cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher
  • A minimum grade of C in degree professional courses and science courses (i.e., Anatomy & Physiology I and II, Biology, Microbiology, etc.) Some colleges may only allow students to transfer C+ or higher for science courses.
  • A minimum grade of D- in all other associate degree courses.
  • Completion of all program requirements within six years of enrollment at the College
