Credit for Prior Learning
Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) assesses non-collegiate learning for college credit. In other words, CPL helps students earn college credit for learning and skills acquired outside of the traditional college classroom. CPL credits are considered transfer credits, and, thus, do not count toward a student's Grade Point Average or fulfill the College residency.
CPL is available in select programs for select courses. To earn CPL credit, students must complete the appropriate application and provide evidence to demonstrate they have acquired the knowledge that satisfies specific student learning outcomes in an eligible course.
Types of CPL Credit
- Credit by standardized examination
- College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)
- The CLEP examinations cover many subject areas, mainly in the Arts and Sciences (general education).
- A minimum score of 50 is required for all CLEP examinations.
- You are responsible for registering and paying for the costs of each CLEP exam.
- DANTES Subject Standardized Test (DSST)
- A minimum score of 400 is required for all DSST exams.
- Students are responsible for registering and paying for the costs of each DSST exam.
- The Excelsior College Examination Program (Formerly Regents College)
- Note: Excelsior exams are no longer being offered, but credits from Excelsior exams you have taken previously may earn you CPL credit.
- Credit for industry-recognized certification(s) or non-traditional learning experiences, as evaluated by the American Council on Education (ACE) or the National College Credit Recommendation Service (NCCRS), e.g., ACE National Guide to College Credit for Workforce Training; ACE Military Guide to Evaluation of Education in the Armed Services and Military Joint Services Transcripts (JST)
Limitations of CPL Credit
- Students may not earn CPL credit for a course they have failed at Labouré. They must retake the course if it is required in their program of study.
- Students may not earn CPL credit for a course they have previously earned academic or transfer credit for at Labouré.
- CPL credit may not be transferable to another college.
- Labouré College of Healthcare cannot evaluate subject areas for which it does not offer corresponding courses.
- No CPL applications are accepted during a student's last semester of study.
- CPL credits are counted as a form of transfer credit. As such, there are limitations to the number of CPL credits students can earn. All students must meet the residency requirement for their specific program of study, i.e., degree students must complete a minimum of 30 credits at Labouré as part of their graduation requirement.
